What is tModLoader?

Important Note
You must own a legitimate copy of Terraria to use tModLoader. tModLoader requires the base game to function.
Installation Methods
Method 1: Steam (Recommended)
The easiest and most reliable way to install tModLoader is through Steam. This method provides automatic updates and Steam Workshop integration.
- Open Steam and search for "tModLoader" in the store
- Click "Install Game" (it's completely free)
- Wait for the download to complete
- Launch tModLoader from your Steam library
- The game will create necessary mod directories on first launch
Pro Tip:
tModLoader appears as a separate game in your Steam library. You can launch it independently of vanilla Terraria.
Method 2: Manual Installation
For GOG users or those who prefer manual installation. Requires more steps but gives you full control.
- Download the latest release from GitHub Releases
- Extract the downloaded archive to your Terraria installation folder
- Run the tModLoader executable
- Follow the on-screen setup instructions
Default Terraria Locations:
- Steam:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Terraria
- GOG:
C:\GOG Games\Terraria
First Launch
When you launch tModLoader for the first time, it will automatically set up the necessary directories and files.
What Happens on First Launch:

Installing Your First Mods
Using the In-Game Mod Browser

Launch tModLoader
Start tModLoader from Steam or your installation directory

From the main menu, click "Workshop" → "Download Mods"

Click the download icon next to any mod you want
